NTUC Health unveils new nursing home in Singapore

It is the company's second and largest nursing home to date.

Healthcare provider NTUC Health opened its second nursing home in Chai Chee, Singapore in its bid to better service the country’s rapidly ageing population.

The newly opened establishment brings the company’s combined bed capacity to almost 1,000 units.

The proportion of Singaporeans aged 65 years and over has grown at a quick pace from 8.5% in 2007 to 13.0% in 2017, according to the latest population figures released by the Department of Statistics. The report also noted an alarming trend: there are significantly fewer working-age adults to provide support to the country’s ageing demographic as indicated by the falling resident old-age support ratio from 7.7 in 2007 to 5.1 in 2017.

NTUC Health’s depth of expertise in providing eldercare services aims to address this pain point as it actively commits to the delivery of care through medical, nursing, allied health and other services across its nursing homes, with the goal of integrating senior citizens back into the community.

“Since we started running nursing homes in 2015, more than 20 residents have successfully regained their mobility and independence and have been discharged from our nursing homes. Some of them have even resumed work, while others are leading active lives with friends and families around them,” NTUC Health told Healthcare Asia. “Through such efforts, we also hope to erase the stigma of nursing homes being the end point for seniors.”
