Healthcare systems, medical device sector face hurdles in sustainability

Governments are increasing efforts to improve sustainability amidst implementation risks.

Healthcare systems and medical device manufacturers are expected to face several challenges in implementing sustainability measures as the industry shifts towards this trend, according to BMI.

One notable challenge for health systems is the high initial cost of transitioning to sustainable practices and technologies, which can strain budgets, particularly in resource-limited settings.

“However, long-term savings and environmental benefits can justify this investment,” the report said.

Resistance to change amongst professionals and administrators also poses a potential barrier, but comprehensive training programmes and clear communication are expected to mitigate these concerns over time.

Meanwhile, governments are increasing efforts to improve sustainability in alignment with global environmental, social, and governance (ESG) goals. Countries like Australia, Japan, and India, have introduced initiatives to reduce the environmental impact of their healthcare and medical device sectors.

“ESG goals involve implementing regulations designed to decrease emissions, minimise resource usage and ensure product safety,” the report added.
