Bone graft tools sharpen as AI reshapes Taiwan medtech

Lin says wider AI momentum is pulling the firm's design work forward.

Taiwan’s push to apply artificial intelligence across healthcare is beginning to influence how medical manufacturers design 3D-printed bone graft substitutes for surgery.

Lily Lin, Promotions and Information Technology Supervisor at Precisely Printed Medical Co., Ltd., said during Medical Taiwan 2026 that interest in AI is spreading from information processing to medical production and clinical operations.

“The whole of Taiwan is focusing on AI,” Lin said. “They are trying to develop what kinds of things AI can do and what applications can be done by AI.”

Bone graft substitutes are used to fill or support areas where bone has been damaged or lost. For 3D-printed grafts, design software determines features such as shape and internal structure, which may need to reflect the requirements of a particular procedure.

Lin said AI could eventually help refine these features and produce more options for surgical use.

“Since we are doing 3D printing of bone graft substitutes, I think in the future, AI can help us with the design of the bone graft in terms of shape or structure,” she said. “They can come up with more solutions that can be applied during surgery.”

The company’s immediate priority is upgrading its design software and improving the process used to produce grafts. Better tools could reduce manual work and help manufacturers match doctors’ specifications more closely.

Over the next three years, Lin expects AI adoption in Taiwan to extend further into healthcare operations and medical practice.

“AI is going to be a very big part of the whole industry,” she said. “It’s not just for information, but also for actual practice.”

Any move towards AI-assisted graft design will still require clinical review, manufacturing checks and surgeon oversight before the products are used in procedures.
