South Korea’s SNUH opens cloud-based centre for disaster recovery

The new facility is built with earthquake-resistant features.

Seoul National University Hospital (SNUH) has launched a new cloud-based centre to provide medical services and ensure patient safety in the event of disasters.

The disaster recovery (DR) centre, known as 'BESTBunker!', is located approximately 150 kilometres from the main hospital and is built with earthquake-resistant features.

Its cloud-based system enables real-time synchronisation of all hospital business systems, including the hospital information system, picture archiving and communication system, and groupware.

The facility is designed to protect the hospital's core digital systems from unexpected disasters such as fires and cyberattacks.

SNUH said the hospital’s operational systems can be switched to the DR facility within 30 minutes in the event of a disaster affecting the main centre.

“This allows critical tasks such as patient care, surgeries, and prescriptions to continue uninterrupted, whilst recovery efforts for the main centre are conducted concurrently,” it added.
