Alzheimer’s disease cases in 8MM to reach 22.51 million by 2033

China is expected to witness the highest prevalence with an estimated 10.4 million cases.

The total prevalent cases of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) by DSM-IV criteria across eight major markets (8MM) is projected to rise at an annual growth rate of 4.08% to reach 22.51 million in 2033, according to GlobalData.

China is anticipated to witness the highest prevalence of AD, with an estimated 10.4 million cases. In contrast, Spain is expected to report the lowest prevalence, at 0.62 million.

“In 2023, women were more affected than men, accounting for approximately 73% of the total prevalent cases,” said Antara Bhattacharya, Associate Project Manager for GlobalData’s Epidemiology team.

Moreover, older adults aged 75 years and above constituted nearly 79% of total cases, whilst those aged 65 to 74 years made up approximately 21%.

Meanwhile, Bhattacharya highlighted the role of research in understanding the relationship between AD and mortality, which remains a concern amongst affected individuals and their families.

“The treatment for AD requires a multifaceted approach that integrates medical interventions, lifestyle modifications, ongoing support, along with clinical trials, and follow-up care,” Bhattacharya said.

8MM: US, France, Germany, Italy, Spain, UK, Japan, and China.
