Do more in sustainability, medical device industry told

Sustainability in medical devices is lagging due to strict rules.

Medical device sector was urged to address pressing issues on climate crisis by being more sustainable, GlobalData, an analytics firm, said.

The industry is reportedly lagging behind in sustainability practices due to strict standards. In GlobalData’s recent survey, 58% respondents said the medical device industry is not doing enough to be more environmentally sustainable.

“Risk and quality management standards are often uncompromising due to the nature of the products, as changes cannot be made at the expense of the population’s health,” said GlobalData.

In a statement, Alexandra Murdoch, medical analyst at GlobalData, said the medical device industry faces strict rules in comparison to other industries.

One way to push for eco-friendly practices is reducing waste.

“Healthcare facilities generate a lot of waste through disposable devices, such as sharps, trace chemotherapy, and pathological waste. The use of single use products has been exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic, as it has greatly increased the use of products like masks and gloves,” read the statement.
