An amino acid is administered before the procedure.
King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Jeddah has introduced fluorescence-guided surgery for brain tumour removal.
The technique involves administering 5-Aminolevulinic Acid to patients before surgery, causing tumour cells to illuminate under specific lighting.
The approach is particularly beneficial for high-grade gliomas, which are difficult to separate from surrounding brain tissue.
“This allows surgeons to clearly distinguish between healthy and affected tissues, improving complete tumour removal rates by up to 30%,” KFSHRC said.
