Australia to invest $6.4m in First Nations-led cancer research

The funding will support translational, community-based cancer projects in three key areas.

The Australian government is set to invest approximately $6.4m (A$9.6m) in First Nations-led cancer research through a new grant scheme. 

The Partnerships for Cancer Research programme will generate knowledge to inform inclusive and equitable cancer care whilst building the capacity of the First Nations cancer research sector. Up to 12 community-based grants, ranging from $535,000 (A$800,000) to $1.7m (A$2.5m), will be awarded for projects lasting up to three years.

The funding will support translational, community-based cancer research projects in three key areas, namely prevention and early detection, access to cancer care, and patient experiences and outcomes from diagnosis through to survivorship.

Moreover, it aims to establish new partnerships and strengthen existing collaborations amongst organisations focused on improving cancer care for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
