Australia allocates $12.2m to childhood brain cancer research

One key initiative includes the establishment of a clinical trial consortium.

The Australian Government is set to invest nearly $12.2m (A$20m) in funding to support national research focusing on childhood brain cancers, including ‘diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma’ (DIPG).

Approximately $8.6m (A$14m) will be used to establish a national childhood brain cancer clinical trial consortium, whilst $3.7m (A$6m) will fund early-stage clinical research.

Meanwhile, three universities applied for funding through the Medical Research Future Fund 2024 Paediatric Brain Cancer Research grants.

The funding follows the government’s move last year to ensure families have access to ONC201, an experimental medicine targeting DIPG.
