Mayapada earmarks 25% of capex for digital health push

It aims to double its hospitals to 14 in 10 years.

Mayapada Healthcare is committing a quarter of its capital expenditure to build secure communications and digital systems as part of a plan to expand its hospital network across Indonesia over the next decade.

The group, which operates seven hospitals, aims to grow to 14 facilities within 10 years. Its digital transformation strategy is expected to more than triple patient numbers and revenue during the period, Chief Medical Officer Dini Handayani told Healthcare Asia.

“Approximately 20–25% of our capital expenditure over the 2025–2026 period is allocated to digital health and IT infrastructure,” she said in an online interview. Key projects include upgrades to its hospital information system, electronic medical records, and patient engagement platform.

The group’s expansion pipeline includes Mayapada Apollo Batam International Hospital, a joint project with Apollo Hospitals India, slated to open by early 2027. In late 2024, Mayapada secured $157 million from Bain Capital LP to support its growth strategy.

A partnership with Netsfere, Inc. is central to the group’s push for secure communications. Staff across existing and upcoming hospitals are being equipped with encrypted messaging tools to share patient information whilst meeting compliance standards.

“The secure communication upgrades represent a significant portion of our digital transformation roadmap for the next 12 to 18 months,” Handayani said. “The platform will scale across all our existing and upcoming facilities.”

She added that the initiative supports Mayapada’s goal of meeting international benchmarks. The group also partners with Singapore’s National University Hospital, Apollo Hospitals India, and Imperial College London for training and fellowships.

Netsfere CEO Anurag Lal said the system was designed to be mobile-first and user-friendly, with training provided to ensure adoption. Hospitals will also have analytics dashboards to monitor usage and compliance in real time.

The investments come as Indonesia’s healthcare sector continues to grapple with uneven digital adoption and rising cyber threats. A SOCRadar report counted more than 4,000 phishing attacks and 130 ransomware incidents in Indonesia in the past year.

One high-profile case was the June 2024 ransomware attack on the National Data Center, which disrupted services at several public agencies. Attackers demanded an $8m ransom, according to Reuters.

“Consumer messaging has made its way into organisations,” Lal said. “By using these platforms, they are compromising security. A breach can cost anywhere from $1m to $10m.”
