SNUH installs ‘smart hearing loop’ system for hearing-impaired patients
It has been installed in eight units across five key hospital areas.
Seoul National University Hospital has installed a “smart hearing loop” system in key hospital areas to improve communication for patients with hearing loss using hearing aids or cochlear implants.
The hospital, led by President Young-Tae Kim, said the system addresses communication difficulties caused by background noise in busy medical settings.
The smart hearing loop uses assistive listening technology that transmits a speaker’s voice directly to compatible hearing devices whilst reducing ambient noise.
Patients can activate the “T-Mode” on their hearing aids or cochlear implants to receive clearer audio. The system also supports Bluetooth Auracast for use with wireless earphones or headsets.
Eight units were installed across five locations, including pediatric and adult otorhinolaryngology consultation rooms, a nurse counseling room, the Daehan Outpatient Administrative Service Center, and Seoseonghwan Hall at the Cancer Hospital.
The hospital said the system is intended to improve communication during consultations and public announcements, while reducing dependence on caregivers.
The project was funded through the Public Health and Medical Support Fund, donated by Young-sul Lee.
Jin-Soo Moon, chief of the division of public health at Seoul National University Hospital, said clear communication is essential for patient safety and treatment outcomes and pledged continued efforts to improve accessibility in healthcare.
