Malaysia introduces Supine HIFU fibroid treatment
The DSH2 rollout is the first in Southeast Asia.
Malaysia’s Damansara Specialist Hospital 2 (DSH2), part of KPJ Healthcare Berhad, has introduced Supine High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) for the treatment of uterine fibroids, becoming the first hospital in Southeast Asia to offer the technique.
In partnership with Delta Medisains (M) Sdn Bhd, the non-invasive procedure treats fibroids using focused ultrasound energy, whilst the patient lies in a face-up position, the hospital said in a press release.
DSH2 said early cases show shorter hospital stays and faster recovery compared with conventional surgical treatment for selected patients.
The hospital will run the programme over five years to support clinical use, training, and technical development of the technology in Malaysia.
It will also include medical education and clinical support for healthcare staff.
KPJ Healthcare said the adoption of the technology forms part of its wider focus on specialised women’s healthcare services and minimally invasive treatment options within its hospital network.
Consultant obstetricians and gynaecologists Dr Liew Yen Eit and Dr Haliza Kamarudin lead the programme at DSH2, supported by multidisciplinary clinical teams.
The hospital said it aims to expand the use of Supine HIFU within its women’s health services as part of ongoing service development at the facility.
