Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital wins at Healthcare Asia Awards 2026 for hospital and safety excellence

The hospital secured top honours with strong growth and patient safety protocols.

Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital won Hospital of the Year - Thailand and Patient Safety Initiative of the Year - Thailand in the Healthcare Asia Awards 2026.

The hospital operates under the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital, Mahidol University. It follows a governance model that provides tertiary and referral care whilst keeping financial independence. Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital gives 50% of its earnings back to Siriraj Hospital. This supports patient care, teaching, and research.

Over 14 years, the hospital expanded its services. Outpatient visits jumped from 29,527 in 2012 to 925,287 in 2024. Inpatient stays rose from 1,232 to 26,015 in the same period. Income topped US$300m in 2025, up over 800%. Patient satisfaction stayed high at 4.62 to 4.79 out of 5 for nearly a decade.

Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital runs 24 specialty centres, 5 clinics, and 20 inpatient units. Clinical results stand out in tough cases, with heart failure mortality at nearly 0% and prostate cancer 5-year survival at 100%, and 10-year survival at 97%. Orthopaedics handled 6,702 knee and hip replacements from 2012 to 2025, including 1,265 MAKO robotic procedures. The Urology and da Vinci Robotic Surgery Centre completed 737 procedures from 2016 to 2025. The cardiac team performed more than 1,000 structural heart interventions (TAVR, TPVR, mitral clip, triclip) from SiTHIS (Siriraj transcatheter heart valve intervention and surgery) in a hybrid operating room.

The hospital tackled space limits and rising patient needs. It turned back-office areas into clinical spaces and added 17 ICU beds, whilst critical care beds now total 92. A High Dependency Unit is set to open in 2026 for better step-down care.

For patient safety, Siriraj Piyamaharajkarun Hospital rolled out the Revised Early Warning System (REWS). This adapts the NEWS2 score into a full escalation process across wards. It sets clear roles for nurses and doctors. Low-risk patients get routine checks. Moderate risk triggers doctor review in 30 minutes. High risk calls for action in 15 minutes. Life-threatening cases alert the Medical Response Team right away.

In the first two months, vital signs documentation hit 80% completeness. Escalation complied 100% with time limits. Monthly Medical Response Team calls dropped from 2.8 to near zero. This shows early detection works.
