Aster CMI Hospital introduces Karnataka’s first excimer laser angioplasty

Ultraviolet pulses clear hardened plaque in the heart’s arteries.

India’s Aster CMI Hospital has introduced Karnataka’s first excimer laser angioplasty, using the Philips Nexcimer Laser System.

The laser applies controlled pulses of ultraviolet light energy to vaporise hardened plaque into microscopic particles to restore smooth blood flow with minimal damage to surrounding tissues.

The technique is designed for patients with complex heart blockages, such as calcified deposits, in-stent restenosis, and chronic total occlusions.

According to the hospital, India accounts for nearly one-fifth of the world’s heart disease burden, with over 50 million people affected.
