Taoyuan Chang Gung Memorial Hospital takes home win at Healthcare Asia Awards 2025

The hospital has achieved a 96.5% urgent test completion rate, 96.4% automatic report verification, reduced redraw rates, and a 5.6 sigma report accuracy.

Taoyuan Chang Gung Memorial Hospital received the Smart Hospital Initiative of the Year - Taiwan category award at the coveted Healthcare Asia Awards 2025 for ensuring laboratory efficiency through its innovative multi-intelligent services, which have streamlined and automated key processes.

Amongst these innovations is the blood collection registration process, which allows patients to register in just five seconds via a QR code generated by their doctor's order. This information is swiftly transmitted to the automatic tube preparation system, ensuring efficient blood test tubes preparation. The Smart BI System prioritises services for wheelchair users and patients aged over 85, significantly reducing their waiting times.

The hospital’s Intelligent Assistance System proactively identifies special patient information, enabling it to implement preemptive safety measures for patients with needle phobia or allergies to latex and alcohol disinfectants. Additionally, it prompts staffs to follow standard operating procedures, further enhancing patient safety.

A triple electronic identification system has been integrated, encompassing doctor's orders, health insurance cards, and barcodes for all collection tubes ensuring compliance with HIMSS-7 certification requirements.

Specimens are efficiently transported to the laboratory via a conveyor belt system in less than three minutes. Automated robotic arms place samples into RFID holders, processed within a dual-layer, bidirectional, high-efficiency system. Real-time status tracking is enabled through label scanning, and urgent samples are prioritised through a bidirectional application programming interface.

The automatic intelligent laboratory system performs daily automatic quality control and real-time monitoring to detect hemolysis, lipemia, and jaundice. By using Serum Index rules, the lab can minimise re-sampling by rejecting only abnormal items. An automated verification system improves turnaround time, reduces report errors, and promptly notifies physicians of critical values through a dedicated app.

After testing, specimens are stored in refrigerated units that are regularly cleaned to minimise risks related to blood waste handling, ensuring staff safety, and maintaining high standards.

These innovations have reduced the average patient waiting time to just 3.08 minutes, with 96.2% of patients receiving their blood draw within 10 minutes. Patient satisfaction scores an impressive 4.85 out of 5. By optimising automatic verification rules, 96.4% of reports are verified automatically.

Additionally, the completion rate for urgent outpatient lab tests within one hour is 96.5%. The redraw rate of blood samples has decreased from 0.27% to 0.06%. Report modifications have been reduced, achieving a 5.6 sigma level. The critical value notification rate stands at 100%.
