China Medical University Hospital lands two wins at Healthcare Asia Awards 2025
It clinched the win for its digital transformation and biomedical innovations, and its CEO Der-Yang Cho for championing a patient-first approach.
China Medical University Hospital (CMUH) was recognised during the coveted Healthcare Asia Awards 2025 for its stellar performance in shaping the future of sustainable healthcare, leading in digital transformation and biomedical innovation to enhance global medical care, primarily driven by its CEO, Dr Der-Yang Cho.
As the flagship of the China Medical University Healthcare System with 22 institutions across Taiwan, CMUH has provided exceptional care through 2,000 beds and 5,900 staff, specialising in critical and complex care like stroke and cardiovascular interventions, comprehensive organ transplantation, proton therapy, cell therapy, multi-organ reconstruction, and minimally invasive robotic surgery, serving urban Taichung to remote mountain areas.
The hospital harnesses digital transformation and artificial intelligence (AI) innovations to revolutionise care, becoming the first hospital in Taiwan certified at the highest stage across various frameworks and models developed by the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society in assessing the maturity of healthcare organisations when it comes to IT infrastructure, electronic medical records, data analytics, and digital imaging.
It has implemented groundbreaking initiatives such as i.A.M.S for sepsis management, the Smart Heart Platform for out-of-hospital myocardial infarction care, and ARDITeX alongside the HiThings ICU Command Centre, achieving significant reductions in patient mortality. CMUH has also launched Taiwan's only remote haemodialysis platform, improving care access for underserved communities.
Meanwhile, CMUH's success in healthcare quality stems from a patient-centred approach and seven interdisciplinary platforms that address unmet medical needs, integrating Al, cell therapy, exosomes, microbiomes, infectious diseases, neurodegenerative disorders, and academic-industry partnerships. Notably, it has pioneered the first allogeneic CAR-biTE GDT therapy for solid cancer with approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
CMUH was honoured as the Hospital of the Year - Taiwan for these accomplishments.
However, such milestones have not been achieved easily. Facing global healthcare challenges, CMUH has been led by CEO Cho to digital transformation and biotech innovations in order to elevate healthcare quality.
Cho has championed a patient-first approach, driving CMUH to transform healthcare quality and spearhead innovation.
Beyond his administrative leadership, Cho’s clinical expertise has driven global advancements, including an endoscopic haematoma evacuation technique featured in Harvard University's Clinical Neurosurgical Techniques textbook, setting new standards for stroke surgery and improving patient outcomes.
The CMUH CEO has bagged the CEO of the Year title in the prestigious awards programme for pushing the hospital into becoming a global pioneer in smart healthcare.
