The Alfred launches Victoria’s first concussion clinic

The facility has admitted over 680 concussion patients annually.

Melbourne-based tertiary hospital The Alfred has opened the first public-funded adult concussion clinic in Victoria.

Located at Caulfield Hospital, the Alfred Health Concussion Clinic enables the facility to admit patients up to six month post-injury, providing services for neurology, physiotherapy, speech therapy and clinical psychology.

Patients aged over 16 suffering ongoing effects from concussion are eligible, with access either in person or via telehealth, via referral from their health care provider.

The new clinic was launched in response to patients severely impacted by concussions in The Alfred and Sandringham Hospital emergency departments, but not receiving follow-up care.

“One of the most important things we need to inform people about is managing repeated risk of concussion, because that can really do damage. The key to this service is bridging a gap for our public patients that cannot access services otherwise,” Emma Maguire, clinic lead and occupational therapist at The Alfred, said.

The Alfred Health has seen over 680 concussion patients every year, over 10 per week.
