Zimmer Biomet snags Orthopaedic Product Innovation of the Year - Singapore at Healthcare Asia Medtech Awards

It was recognised for its robotic platform assisting orthopaedic surgeons, the Rosa Knee system.

Zimmer Biomet nabbed Orthopaedic Product Innovation of the Year - Singapore trophy at the recently concluded Healthcare Asia Medtech Awards. The awards programme aims to recognise medtech companies that have made a remarkable impact on their clients and patients.

Zimmer Biomet was recognised for its ROSA Knee System, a robotic platform that aims at assisting orthopaedic surgeons with bony resections, as well as assessing the state of the soft-tissues to facilitate implant positioning during a total knee arthroplasty (TKA).

Elective TKA procedures are very common and effective treatments for patients with debilitating knee arthritis. However, only 85% of patients are satisfied with their primary TKA, which tells that more can be done to relieve pain and restore function in a substantial proportion of patients. Inaccurate implant positioning in up to 30% cases has been reported using the conventional technique in TKA, independent of the surgeon’s experience. This is what ROSA Knee tries to address. With its x-ray for preoperative planning, which is designed to reduce patient radiation exposure associated with CT scans and the number of instrument trays by 33%, saving sterile processing costs, reducing lifting requirements by perioperative staff, as well as adding workflow efficiencies. Flexible imaging options are also available based on the surgeon’s preference as ROSA Knee offers both image-based and image-free options for greater flexibility.

Not only does the ROSA Knee give flexibility but it also offers surgeons precision and accuracy through the cut flow and validation feature, designed to ensure proper alignment in real time.

ROSA Knee’s real-time soft-tissue balancing also assists with the bone resections, as well as assessing the state of the soft tissues to facilitate implant positioning intraoperatively. Surgeons are also able to objectively measure soft tissue feedback and virtually conduct a knee replacement before performing any resections.

Furthermore, surgeons may choose between three of the most distinguished knee implant systems in the world, including Persona®, Vanguard®, and NexGen®4–6, personalising implant selection with patient-specific needs.

From the ROSA planning screen, surgeons receive live feedback and data of soft tissues, femoral rotation and ligament tension, which helps uncover clinical insights throughout the surgery. These insights are intended to help surgeons and care teams optimise  surgical outcomes as well as visualise the connections between intraoperative care and post-operative recovery.

Hear from Edward Yager, APAC Regional Strategic Marketing Director, as he discusses the importance of data sets in the process of total knee replacement and how ROSA Knee augments value to both surgeons and patients.
