New safe assessment unit to open at Shellharbour Hospital
It offers a low-stimulus environment for patients struggling in a busy ED setting.
A specialised safe assessment unit is set to open as part of Shellharbour Hospital’s emergency department (ED), according to the Australian government.
The unit supports patients presenting with behavioural disturbances linked to alcohol, drugs, or mental health crises.
It is designed to offer a low-stimulus environment where patients, who may struggle in a busy ED setting, can be admitted, assessed and treated.
Care will be provided by a multidisciplinary team of clinicians working across mental health, clinical pharmacology, and alcohol and drug services.
