Children’s Hospital Westmead completes $440.4m expansion

The expansion adds 14-storey building and 40 beds. 

Construction of the main building in the $440.4m (AUD 659.1m) Stage 2 Redevelopment of Children’s Hospital Westmead is complete, adding new treatment spaces and beds.

The 14-storey building includes expanded neonatal and paediatric intensive care units, equipped with medical pendants and automated dispensing cabinets to support critical care.

All inpatient rooms are single-patient with carer beds and private ensuites. The design incorporates natural light, calming interiors, and patient entertainment systems.

The redevelopment adds cancer services with a day oncology treatment centre and inpatient units, a perioperative unit with operating theatres and cardiac catheterisation labs, a state-wide burns service, a pharmacy with robotic medication delivery, and a surgical short stay unit.

An additional $26.8m (AUD 40.1m) in 2025/26 funding will fit out two inpatient units on Level 13 for children with chronic and complex conditions.

The hospital is preparing to begin operations in the new building in the coming months.

The project is part of wider health investments in Western Sydney, including new hospitals at Rouse Hill and Bankstown, and extra beds at Blacktown and Mount Druitt hospitals.
