Australian gov’t to establish national body for genomics
Genomics Australia will prioritise improving access to personalised cancer care.
The government is establishing Genomics Australia, a national body to advance genomic research and technologies, with an initial funding commitment of over $19.4m (A$30m) for its first four years.
Genomics Australia will collaborate with states and territories to implement an updated national health genomics policy framework, with an initial focus on improving access to personalised cancer care.
The body will operate within the Department of Health and Aged Care, along with a commissioner supported by expert advisory committees.
These committees will include representatives from research, clinical fields, industry, consumer groups, and First Nations communities.
