Al Qassimi Hospital adopts new system for chronic limb-threatening ischemia

It is designed to keep arteries open whilst delivering everolimus to support vessel healing.

UAE’s Al Qassimi Hospital has adopted the Esprit BTK System, a dissolvable stent for patients with chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) below-the-knee (BTK).

CLTI BTK is a severe form of peripheral artery disease, characterised by blocked arteries that restrict blood flow and oxygen to the lower leg and foot. 

The Esprit BTK System, comprised of materials similar to dissolving sutures, is designed to keep arteries open whilst delivering everolimus to promote vessel healing prior to dissolving.

The device is implanted through a catheter-based minimally invasive procedure, whilst the scaffold provides support to the vessel until it can remain open on its own.

According to Dr Arif Al Nooryani, director of Al Qassimi Hospital, the stent addresses BTK blockages, which usually lead to amputations and high mortality rates within five years of treatment.
