Abu Dhabi rolls out whole-genome sequencing for newborns

The programme screens over 815 treatable childhood genetic conditions.

The Department of Health – Abu Dhabi has launched a newborn genetic screening programme in the Emirate.

The programme offers whole-genome sequencing to screen more than 815 treatable childhood genetic conditions.

Its first phase has been implemented at Kanad Hospital and Danat Al Emarat Hospital, in partnership with M42.

In addition, the department trained 16 paediatricians and neonatologists across Corniche Hospital, Danat Al Emarat and Kanad Hospital, on genetic counselling practices and the importance of newborn genetic screening.

The initiative is planned to be expanded across all maternity hospitals to screen all UAE nationals and children of mothers born in the Emirate.
