Hemas Hospitals (Pvt) Ltd Sri Lanka wins three Healthcare Asia Awards

Hemas Hospitals (Pvt) Ltd was awarded three awards in the recently concluded Healthcare Asia Awards 2019.

The internationally accredited hospital in Sri Lanka won the Patient Care Initiative of the Year Award, the Service Delivery Innovation Initiative of the Year, and the Health Promotion Initiative Award.

Hemas Hospitals (Pvt) Ltd is one of the leading and fastest growing private hospital chains in Sri Lanka with two multispecialty hospitals situated in the outskirts of Colombo, Sri Lanka's commercial capital of Sri Lanka. They also have a nationwide chain of diagnostic laboratories. The award-winning hospital is the first internationally accredited hospital chain in Sri Lanka with its accreditation from the Australian Council on Healthcare Standards International. They have also been certified by ISO 9001, ISO 14001 & OHSAS 18001.

With its brilliant initiative to prevent amputation through proper wound care management, the hospital clinched the Patient Care Initiative of the Year Award for Sri Lanka. Through this project, Hemas Hospitals (Pvt) Ltd provides basic understanding of pathophysiology in the different phases of healing in acute wounds. It also aims to shed light on classifying risk factors and their mechanisms in causing non-healing in chronic wounds. It also introduces useful strategies and a systemic approach to enhance wound healing. This initiative seeks to reduce preventable amputations and improve the quality of life of diabetic patients with education and early intervention. It also aims to
reduce cost incurred by patients and to provide proper wound care management.

Known as a disruption of the skin's normal structure and function, a wound is a common sight in the hospital. Chronic wounds, however, are more complicated as healing does not occur for them in an orderly and timely manner to restore anatomic and functional integrity of the skin architecture. As they are more complex, chronic wound care may need a multidisciplinary approach which involves allied health members to provide additional nutritional, nursing and
psychosocial support.

With their aid of their adept nurses, Hemas Hospitals performs wound care management for patients scheduled for  amputation. According to the hospital, 200 planned amputation patients were tallied from January to December 2017, with 183 patients introduced to the wound care clinic and the planned care process to prevent amputation. On the other hand, 17 patients underwent amputation due to unavoidable complications like severe soft tissue infection,
osteomyelitis, peripheral arterial occlusion, and gangrene.

For a hospital stay of one week, a patient is charged an average amount of RS 150,000 ($1000) to undergo amputation while patients who are admitted to the wound care clinic are only charged RS 44,000 ($293) on average. This significant difference is a great impact, as Sri Lanka's mean household income for a month is RS 88,692 ($591). Besides hefty savings, patients who were treated through wound care management had positive effects on their health and well-being. Wound care patients developed healthy nutrition plans, quit smoking, exercised regularly and committed to change their lifestyle.
