Capsule endoscopy market to reach $2.15b by 2033 on GI disease surge

Capsule endoscopy does not support treatment.

The global capsule endoscopy system market reached $1.09b in 2024 and is projected to rise to $2.15b by 2033, reflecting a compound annual growth rate of 8.2%, according to Growth Market Reports.

The study identifies rising cases of gastrointestinal disorders as a key factor supporting market growth, highlighting the need for internal imaging in early diagnosis of digestive diseases.

Capsule endoscopy uses a swallowable camera capsule to capture images of the gastrointestinal tract.

Hospitals and diagnostic centres use the system to detect gastrointestinal disorders, including Crohn’s disease, colorectal cancer, and obscure gastrointestinal bleeding.

“Healthcare systems globally are shifting toward non-invasive or minimally invasive procedures,” the report said, adding that the procedure eliminates discomfort and sedation requirements connected to traditional endoscopy, supporting wider use in screening and diagnostic workflows.

The market also reflects ongoing changes in imaging technology as manufacturers have introduced higher-resolution cameras, longer battery life, and real-time image transmission.

The use of artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted image analysis to support detection of abnormalities, including bleeding, polyps, and inflammation.

High procedure costs serve as a key constraint on adoption, particularly in developing regions as capsule endoscopy provides diagnostic capability only and does not support treatment.

“There is also a need for trained professionals to interpret large volumes of image data effectively,” the report said.

Manufacturers continue to develop next-generation capsule devices with improved imaging resolution, battery performance, and data transmission.

Increasing investment in healthcare infrastructure in emerging economies and rising awareness of non-invasive diagnostics are areas of expansion, according to the report.

The report states that capsule endoscopy systems will see wider use in gastrointestinal diagnostics as healthcare providers prioritise early disease detection and preventive screening.

“Ongoing research and development activities, along with broader adoption of AI-integrated medical devices, are expected to further enhance efficiency and affordability,” it said.
