The Children’s Hospital at Westmead opens new Wattle Building
The new paediatric hospital building focuses on family-centred care, natural light, play, and connection to landscape.
The Children’s Hospital at Westmead has officially opened its new Wattle Building to the public.
Designed by Billard Leece Partnership for Health Infrastructure and the Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network, the project forms part of the largest investment in paediatric health in NSW in 25 years.
The Westmead redevelopment sits alongside the new Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick, and the Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre, which opened at the end of 2025.
The new building was designed to support not only clinical care but also wellbeing, family connection, play, movement, and access to nature.
The project also links paediatric health services across three buildings and includes support facilities for families and carers, such as a small grocery store and outdoor spaces for respite and play.
Key features include single-occupancy patient rooms designed as “bedrooms not wards,” inpatient units arranged as neighbourhoods of 12 rooms each, multi-purpose family spaces with 24/7 access, interactive play and discovery zones, and biophilic design elements.
The project has a gross floor area of 57,000 square metres and includes a 1,004-car multistorey car park.
