India bets on AI in groundbreaking study to curb preterm births

The programme has generated a repository of over 1.6 million biospecimens.

India has launched its largest pregnancy cohort study of 12,000 women to develop indigenous and artificial intelligence-driven solutions to reduce preterm births.

According to a press release, the programme has generated a repository of over 1.6 million well-characterised biospecimens and more than one million ultrasound images.

“It integrates clinical epidemiology, multi-omics biomarkers, and artificial intelligence for personalised predictions,” Dr Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State for Science & Technology, said.

He said the initiative has also established the GARBH-INi-DRISHTI data-sharing platform, enabling wider access for the research community.

Referring to India’s bioeconomy growth to US$195b, the Minister cited biotechnology as one of the key drivers of the initiative.
