Peninsula University Hospital reopens with capacity for 35,000 patients annually
The $730m redevelopment includes upgraded emergency department facilities.
The Peninsula University Hospital, formerly Frankston Hospital, is set to reopen its doors on 20 January 2026, after a $730m (AU$1.1b) redevelopment, aiming to ease wait times and ambulance offload delays whilst delivering faster and better care.
The 12-storey tower will allow treatment of 35,000 more patients annually and add 130 beds, 15 new operating theatres, and expanded services for mental health, oncology, and women’s and children’s care.
A major feature of the hospital is the new emergency department, highlighting its mental health and alcohol and other drugs hub, dedicated paediatric zone, and rooftop helipad.
The hospital has been the state’s top performer under the Standards for Safe and Timely Ambulance and Emergency Care since February 2025, handing over more than 95% of ambulance patients within the 40-minute target.
“Our dedicated doctors, nurses and frontline staff at the new Peninsula University Hospital now have the world-class facilities to care for families in this growing area of Melbourne,” said Mary-Anne Thomas, Minister for Health.
