New $553.3m John Hunter acute services building revealed
The building connects the existing hospital with the Hunter Medical Research Institute.
The Australian Government announced the facade reveal of the new $553.3m (A$835m) acute services building at the John Hunter Health and Innovation Precinct.
The expansion will increase intensive care unit capacity by 60% and add nearly 50% more operating theatres.
The new building features four link bridges, connecting with the existing hospital and the Hunter Medical Research Institute.
The facility will house a new emergency department designed to handle over 95,000 presentations annually. It will also include 22 operating theatres, nine interventional suites, birthing suites, inpatient maternity wards, a neonatal intensive care unit, and special care units.
Meanwhile, a rooftop helipad will be installed, and the precinct will provide more than 900 additional car parking spaces.
