Sigma promotes eco-friendly shift in medical packaging
The firm uses water-based adhesives on Tyvek and aims to tackle hospital recycling challenges.
Sigma Medical Supplies Corp. is pushing for greener solutions in the medical industry by enhancing the sustainability of sterilisation packaging. Speaking at Medical Taiwan 2025, Emma Lai of Sigma highlighted their efforts to meet growing demand for eco-friendly materials.
“Sigma is one of the largest sterilisation packaging providers in the Asia region,” Lai said. “In the past years, we have received a lot of inquiries regarding how we can make our product more sustainable.”
“We apply water-based adhesive on the DuPont material called Tyvek... and with this water-based material, we are able to improve its efficiency in the production and the eco-friendly materials are 100% applied in the medical industry,” she explained.
However, contamination remains a key barrier to full recyclability. “Until today, there is no complete system to keep a track on how the medical devices contamination can be recycled within the hospital system,” Lai noted.
“We are hoping that the hospitals, the recycling parties, the government institution and the manufacturer like Sigma itself will be able to evolve and integrate and have a complete solution,” she said.
