New Zealand’s Nelson Hospital to undergo major redevelopment

The project includes a new 128-bed inpatient building.

Nelson Hospital is set for a major redevelopment as part of the New Zealand Government’s $594m ($1b) investment in hospital infrastructure, according to Health Minister Simeon Brown.

The redevelopment includes a new inpatient building with 128 beds—an increase of 41 from the current capacity.

The new facility will feature an acute assessment unit, transit lounge, pharmacy, blood bank, and dedicated spaces for assessment, treatment, and rehabilitation services.

In addition, the hospital’s George Manson and Percy Brunette buildings will be upgraded and seismically strengthened.

A new energy centre will be built to house critical hospital infrastructure and digital upgrades.

Meanwhile, the hospital will become the first in the country to receive a modular, transportable inpatient unit, providing 28 to 32 beds.

The temporary facilities are designed to provide additional capacity during large-scale construction projects and ensure continuity of care.
