The Medical City brings home five wins at Healthcare Asia Awards 2025
It was recognised for its success in delivering world-class specialised services that rival the best healthcare institutions globally.
The Medical City (TMC) was honoured with five major accolades during the Healthcare Asia Awards 2025, namely the Hospital of the Year - Philippines, Public-Private Healthcare Partnership of the Year - Philippines, Patient Safety Initiative of the Year - Philippines, Secondary Hospital of the Year - Philippines, and the Primary Care Provider of the Year - Philippines titles.
Currently, TMC operates the most active paediatric liver transplantation programme in the country with 15 successful cases. This distinction has led to a partnership with the Philippine government, enabling the Paediatric Access to Liver Transplantation Programme to provide free transplants for underserved children.
TMC has also signed an agreement with Rizal Medical Centre in early 2025, strengthening its commitment to liver transplantation for adult and paediatric patients through capacity building and knowledge-sharing.
In 2024, the hospital achieved its seventh consecutive reaccreditation from the Joint Commission International (JCI). Specifically, its Acute Myocardial Infarction Programme brought the hospital’s 4th JCI Gold Seal of Approval for its exceptional cardiac care outcomes, retaining its status as one of the only 12 programmes worldwide to receive such recognition.
TMC's expertise also extends to pioneering procedures, such as a mechanical thrombectomy performed on a 105-year-old patient — the oldest recipient recorded worldwide for this life-saving treatment.
At the same time, its influence extends internationally through its partnership with the Department of Tourism for medical tourism. Offering specialised services in cancer care, cardiology, neurology, maternity, preventive health, and emergency medicine, the hospital continues to attract patients from around the world.
Its dedication to equitable healthcare is evident in its community health initiatives. Its Hope Mobi-Clinic provides free breast cancer screenings to underserved communities. It has collaborated with government agencies and non-profit organisations to deliver vital medical services to 61 children rescued from exploitative labour conditions. TMC has partnered with the Pasig Tripartite Industrial Peace Council, Pasig City Public Employment Service Office, and the Department of Labor and Employment National Capital Region PAPAMAMARISAN Office to conduct comprehensive health assessments for these vulnerable children.
This project stands out for its holistic and sustainable approach to child welfare. Rather than stopping at immediate healthcare interventions, it lays the groundwork for long-term recovery and empowerment. By integrating medical support with social services, the programme ensures that rescued children also have the opportunity to thrive.
“This initiative is a model for how healthcare providers, government agencies, and nonprofits can join forces to protect and uplift vulnerable populations. Through continued collaboration, TMC and its partners are committed to ensuring that every rescued child is given a chance to reclaim their childhood and build a healthier, brighter future,” it said.
TMC was lauded as the Hospital of the Year - Philippines, with its initiative to rescue child labourers, also earning it the Public-Private Healthcare Partnership of the Year - Philippines accolade.
Navigating the great reset
Since being honoured in the prestigious award programme’s 2024 iteration, TMC Clinic has continued to navigate the evolving landscape of healthcare with resilience and agility.
In the last year, it has opened 12 new clinics, managed four expansions, and undertaken 22 renovations. The available services in each clinic are as strategically planned as the specific locations. On top of the essential and expected primary healthcare services, some are categorised as specialty clinics as well, including a dialysis centre, ambulatory surgical centres, rehabilitation medicine and physical therapy, endoscopy unit, cardiac rehab, sleep laboratory, women's health, mental health, and a bone and joint centre.
Keeping the clinics running smoothly is a strong, motivated, well-equipped and continuously training-updated health allied workforce, having 15% more since 2023.
HMO engagements, a distinctive advantage of TMC Clinics, have been further strengthened from last year as well through engagement incentives and steerage programmes.
Whilst industry apprehension persists globally and in the Philippines regarding the threat of rising costs and potential competition with HMOs, TMC Clinic has been able to work with these industry partners for results that benefit all sectors of the primary healthcare system.
The clinic’s current management team also focussed on the goal of a fully operational and efficient front-end to back-end TMC Clinic in 2024, which it has achieved. From the expected transformation pains, its Business Operations processes have stepped up exponentially with the full implementation of its digital processes.
All these developments have allowed the organisation to be at par with global developments in healthcare, particularly in artificial intelligence and digital transformation. Such a feat has earned them the Primary Care Provider of the Year - Philippines win for the second year in a row.
A ‘heartfelt’ promise to safety
TMC’s tertiary care facility in Clark has also been awarded the Patient Safety Initiative of the Year - Philippines for its "Safety Starts With Me" campaign, which aims to create a culture of safety and compassion, centred on the essential act of hand hygiene.
At the core of this campaign is the powerful message, “Clean Hands Save Lives,” reaching diverse groups through tailored educational lectures.
Under the programme, TMC’s "Save That Line!" campaign for haemodialysis patients has become a vital tool in preventing Central Line-Associated Bloodstream Infections. Meanwhile, the "Creating Hygiene Heroes" campaign has engaged the youth, teaching the importance of preventing vector-borne diseases like dengue and leptospirosis.
It has also vibrantly celebrated Infection Prevention Week, emphasising hand hygiene and the role of nutrition in boosting immunity and infection prevention.
Meanwhile, the hospital has taken a compassionate yet firm stance against antimicrobial resistance with its Antimicrobial Stewardship programme. Esteemed doctors have shared insights through lectures that debunked myths, highlighted the dangers of improper antimicrobial use, and explained its harmful effects on gut health.
These initiatives under the Safety Starts With Me campaign have helped improve hand hygiene compliance. The result reflects the collective efforts of the hospital community to adopt better practices. “By strengthening infection prevention strategies, TMC Clark is nurturing a community where every hand contributes to the greater good. This impactful campaign reminds us that safety starts with each one of us. Together, we can create a future free from the dangers of infection, where health and hope flourish hand in hand,” TMC said.
Bridging healthcare gaps
TMC Iloilo has also been put in the spotlight for its pursuit to achieve medical excellence and to make quality healthcare more accessible and inclusive to the Ilonggo community.
Despite geographical barriers, it has expanded its reach by fostering collaborations with neighbouring provinces like Antique, Negros Occidental, and Capiz through a series of roadshows, activations, and relationship-building initiatives. These programmes have led TMC Iloilo to strengthen partnerships and fruitful collaborations.
At the same time, it has partnered with Globogate, the largest intermediary for Filipino nurses in Germany, to address the global nursing shortage. This initiative allows TMC nurses to train locally before securing employment in Germany, balancing workforce stability whilst providing career advancement opportunities for healthcare professionals.
TMCI’s strong and enduring partnership with the Iloilo City Government has also been instrumental in addressing gaps in the city’s healthcare landscape and reaching underserved populations. This collaboration has led to creating a resilient and accessible healthcare system that benefits the community.
The hospital and the Iloilo City local government unit have spearheaded impactful initiatives such as mass vaccination programmes and the establishment of a COVID-19 community satellite hospital, amongst many others. By working hand-in-hand, they have been able to efficiently allocate resources, develop targeted health programmes, and provide a unified response to pressing public health challenges.
“This partnership goes beyond delivering healthcare. It has fostered trust, empowered communities, and shown the power of strong private and public partnership. With this, TMC Iloilo is not just addressing healthcare needs; it is building a healthier, stronger, and more inclusive future for Iloilo City and beyond,” TMC said.
TMC Iloilo has been recognised as the Secondary Hospital of the Year - Philippines for these milestones.
