Chang Gung Memorial Medical Foundation Chiayi Chang Gung Memorial Hospital wins ESG Program of the Year - Taiwan
The hospital's multidisciplinary approach, supported by its specialised team, has drastically reduced both mortality and amputation rates.
The groundbreaking work of Chang Gung Memorial Medical Foundation Chiayi Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in treating necrotizing fasciitis, a life-threatening bacterial infection, has earned the ESG Program of the Year - Taiwan award at the Healthcare Asia Awards 2025.
Necrotizing fasciitis is a severe soft tissue infection that spreads rapidly, leading to extensive tissue destruction, potential limb loss, and high mortality rates ranging from 20% to 80%.

Recognising the urgency of improving survival rates, Chang Gung Memorial Medical Foundation Chiayi Chang Gung Memorial Hospital assembled a specialised, multidisciplinary team dedicated to treating necrotizing fasciitis. Through the professionalism and collaboration of teams in emergency medicine, orthopaedic surgery, infectious diseases, plastic surgery, nursing, the intensive care unit (ICU), the hyperbaric oxygen treatment centre, and the microbiology laboratory, the integrated necrotizing fasciitis care team has provided patients with timely, rapid, and the best possible care.
Since the implementation of the programme, the mortality rate for necrotizing fasciitis cases has dropped from 38% in 2008 to just 5.7% (3 out of 52 cases), with a groundbreaking 0% amputation rate.

In cases specifically caused by marine Vibrio-induced necrotizing fasciitis, the mortality rate has decreased from 38.5% to 5.5%, while the amputation rate has been reduced to just 1.9%. The average length of hospitalisation has also been shortened to 19.5 days.
