Delhi becomes 35th state to join India’s national health insurance scheme

Citizens aged 70 and above will be eligible for $5,820 (Rs 5 lakh) in free health coverage.

Delhi has officially joined the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, becoming the 35th State/UT to implement the national health insurance scheme.

As part of the implementation, all senior citizens aged 70 and above, regardless of their socio-economic status, will be eligible for $5,820 (Rs 5 lakh) in free health coverage under the Ayushman Vay Vandana Yojana.

The coverage includes treatment for all pre-existing conditions from the outset.

“In addition, the Delhi government would be giving an additional top-up of 5 lakhs over and above the cover provided by the Central Government,” said Rekha Gupta, Chief Minister, Government of NCT Delhi.

The rollout follows the signing of a memorandum of understanding between the National Health Authority (NHA) under the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare (MoHFW) and the Department of Health & Family Welfare, Government of the National Capital Territory of Delhi.
