Asan Medical Centre uses pulsed-field ablation for atrial fibrillation

PFA targets abnormal cardiac tissue to reduce damage to surrounding areas.

South Korea’s Asan Medical Centre (AMC) has utilised pulsed-field ablation (PFA) to treat atrial fibrillation in a recent operation.

The procedure was performed by Myung-Jin Cha of the Division of Cardiology and her team. Meanwhile, a patient in his 70s underwent his first PFA on 20 December 2024 and was discharged the same day.

According to the centre, PFA uses a catheter to deliver pulsed electric fields that selectively target and remove abnormal cardiac tissue, avoiding damage to surrounding areas.

“Utilising high-energy electricity, the technique is not subject to temperature fluctuations and removes only cardiac tissue cells, minimising damage to surrounding tissue,” AMC said.
