Global photodynamic therapy market to grow by $2.35b by 2028

It will be driven by the rising prevalence of cancer.

The global photodynamic therapy (PDT) market is set to grow by $2.35b from 2024 to 2028, with an expected compound annual growth rate of 8.69%, according to Technavio.

This growth will be driven by the rising prevalence of cancer, ongoing advancements in research, and technological innovations.

PDT is gaining traction due to its effectiveness in treating conditions like acne, bladder cancer, and actinic keratosis.

The therapy uses photosensitisers to make tissues light-sensitive, allowing targeted destruction of abnormal cells when activated by specific light wavelengths. Ongoing research is exploring PDT’s potential in treating other cancers, including pancreatic and thyroid cancers.

Advances in light delivery systems and the development of new photosensitisers are also expected to further fuel market growth.

Despite its growth, PDT faces significant challenges such as high treatment costs driven by expensive photosensitisers and monoclonal antibody therapies. The complex manufacturing process and the need for specialised equipment and trained personnel add to these costs.

Additionally, the report noted that the therapy's effectiveness can vary based on individual patient responses, and the long-term effects are not fully understood.
