Seoul Asan Medical Center expands ESG initiatives

The hospital focuses on eco-friendliness, social responsibility, and transparent management.

Seoul Asan Medical Center has set to develop its ESG management for its hospital operations.

Several ESG activities for expansion include medical waste reduction, zero carbon emissions, and health check-ups for children from vulnerable groups.

Seoul Asan Medical Center became one of the first general hospitals in Korea to establish an ESG committee and pursue eco-friendly, socially responsible, and transparent management measures. Established in 2021, the committee has been promoting ESG practices through reducing waste, supporting community exchange, and enhancing the organisation.

The ESG Committee has instituted three goals: eco-friendliness, social responsibility, and transparent management. Its management is run on 23 indicators, leaning on the K-ESG guidelines and the KH-ESG guidelines for sustainable and dynamic ESG management.

Waste and carbon reduction tasks have led to a 4.9% reduction, more than the previous year, and emissions have reduced by 3.6%. Additionally, the “Building Greenhouse Gas Capacity System' and “Building ESG”, conducted with the Seoul Metropolitan Government, have led to the installation of a power usage metre that measures the hospital’s energy consumption by May 2026 and establishes the facility’s standard emission standards.

“Asan Medical Center, which has been practicing the founding philosophy of the Asan Foundation to ‘help the most needy neighbors in our society,’ has implemented ESG management throughout the hospital operation to realize a higher level of social responsibility,” Lee Je-hwan, ESG Chairman and Vice Director of Medical Services of Asan Medical Center in Seoul, stated.
