What services to expect at Canberra Hospital’s critical services building
One of its features will include a dedicated children’s emergency area.
The Australian government has announced that most of Canberra Hospital’s critical care services will be moving to its upcoming building in August.
One of the building’s services features an emergency department (ED), located on street level, with a dedicated children’s emergency area, which includes a triage and waiting space for paediatric patients, carers and families.
Meanwhile, the new ED’s location allows for better connections between acute services, as well as direct lift access to the hospital’s new helipad.
Another key feature includes new operating theatres to be located on the building’s third floor.
These theatres will offer hybrid and interventional radiology suites, whilst featuring direct lift access connected to the level four centralised sterilising services unit.
Meanwhile, inpatient cardiology services can be accessed on level six, comprising an acute cardiac care unit, a cardiac catheter lab, and a cardiac day unit.
In line with this, there will be a dedicated lab for cardiac electrophysiology procedures, as well as a facility for complex procedures, such as transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).
The critical services building is also set to house additional medical imaging services separate from the hospital’s main suites.
This includes X-ray, computed tomography (CT) scanning, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) services.
