What lies ahead for Austin Hospital's emergency department upgrade?

The project’s main construction is set to commence in 2025.

The $184m (A$275m) Austin Hospital redevelopment project in Australia is set to add up to 29 new emergency treatment spaces, increasing the capacity to handle around 30,000 additional patients annually.

The government said that the project’s early works will involve engineering infrastructure to support both the Austin Hospital and Mercy Hospital towers, including the installation of a new 13,000 kg air-cooled chiller above the Lance Townsend building.

It will also involve building a new plant deck to support the chiller and upgrading existing medical gas systems to increase capacity for lifesaving gases.

Meanwhile, Health Infrastructure Minister Mary-Anne Thomas announced that Built has been appointed to deliver early works, with the main construction set to begin in 2025.

The project is being managed by the Victorian Health Building Authority (VHBA) in partnership with Austin Health.
