Vinmec utilises 3D-printed titanium implant for chest wall reconstruction

It incorporates a mesh to prevent lung hernia and minimise the risk of displacement post-surgery.

Vinmec Times City International Hospital in Vietnam has utilised a 3D-printed titanium implant for chest wall reconstruction in a procedure involving a patient with an 11.5 cm mediastinal tumour.

Its design, developed in collaboration with engineers from VinUniversity's 3D Technology in Medicine Centre, incorporates a mesh to prevent lung hernia, minimising the risk of implant displacement after surgery.

Traditionally, repairs for chest wall defects following cancer surgeries have relied on oblique myocutaneous flaps, which involve relocating skin and muscle from other parts of the body. This method often results in extensive scarring.

According to Vinmec, the use of 3D technology, combined with erector spinae plane (ESP) pain management techniques, contributed to a reduced recovery time, allowing the patient to be discharged within five days.
