UST to set up Hong Kong’s third medical school
The university will contribute over $256.8m (HK$2b) to build a complex at Clear Water Bay.
The Chief Executive-in-Council has endorsed the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (UST) to establish the city’s third medical school.
The school will run a four-year graduate-level medical programme, with the first cohort of 50 medical students expected to be admitted in 2028.
Secretary for Health Prof Lo Chung-mau announced that the approval followed recommendations from the Task Group on New Medical School, which assessed proposals against 10 criteria.
UST will contribute over $256.8m (HK$2b) in donations and internal funds to construct a new complex at its Clear Water Bay campus to house the interim medical school premises. The permanent campus at Ngau Tam Mei is not expected to be ready until around 2034–35.
“Because the teaching hospital in Ngau Tam Mei will not be ready for quite a while, we will need to rely on some other teaching hospitals, which are actually included in the proposal by the UST,” Lo said.
The school's inaugural graduates are expected to begin housemanship in 2032,
