Site preparations begin for Australia’s Canterbury Hospital redevelopment

Early works construction is set to begin next year.

Enabling works have begun at the Canterbury Hospital site as part of its $227.2m (A$350m) redevelopment.

The enabling works are an essential next step to prepare the site for early works construction, which are set to begin next year, subject to formal planning approval, said the Australian Government.

Activities include relocating the hospital’s education centre to allow space for a future multi-storey hospital building.

The relocation is expected to be completed by early 2026.

The redevelopment will include a new intensive care unit, purpose-built adult inpatient accommodation, an expanded emergency department, additional surgical theatres, expanded antenatal facilities, and increased outpatient and ambulatory care capacity.

It will also house new facilities to support clinical education, workforce training, and research.
