NTUH establishes SDM-based palliative care model for cancer patients
The model initiates structured communication at the time of diagnosis.
National Taiwan University Hospital (NTUH) has established an integrated palliative care clinical model centred on shared decision-making (SDM).
The model differs from conventional approaches by initiating structured palliative care communication at the time of cancer diagnosis, rather than only at the terminal stage.
Its process includes an explanation of treatment options, a discussion of risks and benefits, and clarification of patients’ values and preferences.
NTUH said the SDM model was initially applied to patients diagnosed with advanced-stage oral cancer and has since been extended to those with pancreatic and liver cancers.
It was developed amongst palliative care specialists, otolaryngologists, oncologists, case managers, palliative care nurses, and other healthcare professionals, the hospital added.
