New Zealand introduces mobile tracking system for emergency response
The tool can be used for search and rescue operations.
New Zealand has introduced a “Device Location Information” (DLI) system that enables authorities to locate the mobile phones of people considered to be at serious risk.
The tool will be used for search and rescue operations, provided that the missing person has their mobile device switched on and connected to a cellular network, said Police Minister Mark Mitchell.
“Emergency services can use the DLI service to get immediate access to information about the area they are in and send help,” Mitchell added.
In addition, Associate Health Minister Casey Costello said that the system will assist in health emergencies.
“If someone on the phone to Healthline falls unconscious and the call drops, then the DLI service can locate the mobile device they were calling from and send this information to ambulance teams,” she said.
Device Location Information can be used by Fire and Emergency New Zealand, Wellington Free Ambulance, Police, and Hato Hone St John.
Meanwhile, Maritime New Zealand and New Zealand Search and Rescue can request the tool through the Police.
