Medical tourism in India falls 15% over ongoing socio-political unrest in Bangladesh

Bangladeshi patients contribute to 60% of total tourist visits for medical treatment.

The ongoing socio-political unrest in Bangladesh is anticipated to slash India’s medical tourism footfall by 15% this year.

A CareEdge Ratings report revealed that medical tourism contributes approximately 5% of the total revenue in the hospital sector, with Bangladesh accounting for up to 60% of total tourists visiting India for treatment.

Though the decline is expected to recover gradually by the end of the year, hospitals with a high dependency on Bangladeshi medical tourists may experience revenue declines in Q2 and Q3 of FY 2025.

In contrast, larger, multi-location hospitals are likely to experience a relatively minor impact whilst the effects on most industry players are cushioned by strong financial resilience and robust cash accruals.
