KFSHRC performs first robotic liver transplant in Western Region

King Faisal Specialist Hospital & Research Centre (KFSHRC) in Jeddah has successfully performed the first robotic liver transplant in the Western Region.

A 23-year-old man with hereditary chronic progressive liver disease underwent the procedure, marking a significant advancement in medical care.

The surgery, performed entirely with robotic technology for both donor liver removal and transplantation, involved no direct human intervention.

Conducted in collaboration with KFSHRC’s Riyadh liver transplant team, the procedure enhanced precision, reduced recovery time, and minimised complications. Both the donor and recipient were discharged in good health.

KFSHRC plans to conduct two robotic liver transplants per month to expand its program. The hospital has established itself as a leader in robotic surgery, performing the world’s first fully robotic liver transplant in 2023 and achieving 31 such procedures to date.

In 2024, it completed the world’s first robotic heart transplant and the first robotic liver transplant from a living donor using the left lobe, further cementing its global leadership in advanced surgical technology.
