Australia invests $7.8m in rheumatoid arthritis research

The investment will support the development of an antigen-specific tolerising immunotherapy.

The Australian government will allocate $7.8m (A$11.54m) in research to discover a potential treatment for rheumatoid arthritis.

The funding will support researchers at the University of Queensland in investigating further methods to reset the immune system in patients with the chronic condition.

According to the government, the Reset Rheumatoid Arthritis project will develop an antigen-specific tolerising immunotherapy that instructs the immune system to tolerate joint proteins.

Moreover, the initiative will develop a second-generation product for testing in future clinical trials.
