Austral invests $32.5m in type 1 diabetes research
The funding will focus on prevention, treatment, and potential cures.
The Australian government has invested $32.5m (A$50.1m) to support the next phase of the search for a cure for Type 1 Diabetes.
The fund was invested in the Australian Type 1 Diabetes Clinical Research Network, through the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation Australia.
The funding will be allocated over five years to accelerate clinical research for prevention, treatment, and potential cures.
It will support the “Environmental Determinants of Islet Autoimmunity” study, which will investigate how environmental factors influence the onset of the disease.
The investment will also establish a prevention screening pilot programme to identify early-stage Type 1 Diabetes in children before symptoms appear and develop therapies to halt its progression.
