Soeharto Heerdjan Hospital influences healthcare with innovative neuropsychiatry approach

It won the Specialty Hospital of the Year (Psychiatric) - Indonesia category at the Healthcare Asia Awards.

Mental health in Indonesia has become an increasingly important topic in recent years. The stigma and lack of understanding regarding mental health issues have presented significant challenges, such as anxiety, stress, depression, and other mental disorders.

Post-pandemic, the number of mental health disorders in Indonesia, especially amongst children, adolescents, and the elderly, has risen significantly.

As a leading hospital with expertise in mental health services, Soeharto Heerdjan Hospital focusses on psychiatric care and the development of psychiatric sciences. Owned by the Indonesian Ministry of Health, its vision is to become an international neuro-psychiatric referral centre in Asia.

In its efforts to achieve this vision, Soeharto Heerdjan Hospital has consistently worked to improve the quality of both inpatient services and outpatient services, including its psychotic clinic, depression and bipolar clinic, anxiety clinic, addiction clinic, and hypnotherapy clinics. The hospital also provides electrophysiology interventions like transcranial magnetic stimulation, electroconvulsive therapy, and neurofeedback.

The hospital also pays particular attention to vulnerable populations with KUAS BIRU, an innovative day-care service programme. This initiative specifically targets children with ADHD, autism, and learning disorders, aiming to maximise therapy for those with limited access to treatment during the COVID-19 era.

Focussed on children aged 10 to 18, the programme includes activities designed to improve cognitive, emotional, behavioural, sensory-motor, social communication, language, psychosocial, and daily activities.

Visits by children attending the KUAS BIRU programme increased by 32.5% from 2022 to 2023, totalling 807 patients.

Meanwhile, Soeharto Heerdjan Hospital offers TERATAI, a specialised service for geriatrics aged 60 and older. This day-care concept addresses common issues faced by the elderly, such as boredom, loneliness, anxiety, lack of activity, family sensitivity to busy schedules, and health concerns. This initiative is later developed into an integrated service combining outpatient, inpatient, day-care, and respite care.

The programme has seen a 55.3% increase in elderly patients, with 321 new patients from 2023 to 2024.
