Show-Chwan Memorial Hospital honoured for community-integrated healthcare at Healthcare Asia Awards 2026
The hospital developed a multidisciplinary programme supporting cancer patients through clinical treatment, traditional medicine, rehabilitation, and sustained community engagement.
Show-Chwan Memorial Hospital received the Service Innovation of the Year - Taiwan accolade at the Healthcare Asia Awards 2026 for its initiative, Comprehensive Integrated Health Care on Community and Sustainable Developments.
The programme integrated clinical medicine, traditional Chinese medicine, rehabilitation services, and community-based support to address treatment-related challenges experienced by cancer patients and support recovery beyond hospital care.
The initiative operated through the hospital’s Integrated Healthcare Center and focused on coordinated care across diagnosis, treatment, and post-treatment recovery. Medical doctors worked alongside specialists in traditional and complementary medicine, case managers, psychologists, and biomedical researchers to deliver a structured model of integrated care. The approach also responded to declining participation in Taiwan’s national TCM Cancer Patient Extended Care Integration Programme and introduced additional services aimed at improving patient participation and recovery outcomes.
Facilities supporting the programme were consolidated within a dedicated 195-ping “Oasis” Integrated Medicine Center. Treatment areas included deep footbath pools used to relieve chemotherapy-induced neuropathy, manual therapy rooms for the management of lymphedema, and multipurpose spaces used for exercise and psychosocial therapy sessions. The centre allowed patients to access multiple supportive treatments within a single location as part of their treatment and recovery process.
Community participation formed another component of the programme. The hospital partnered with the Qigong Association to organise daily exercise sessions held both within hospital facilities and in community settings. These sessions allowed patients to continue physical rehabilitation activities after clinical treatment. Complementary herbal products, including medicinal teas and footbath packs, were also introduced to help address common treatment-related side effects reported by patients undergoing cancer therapy.
Operational data reflected the programme’s growth after its launch in 2023. The Extended Care Plan enrolled 125 patients and recorded more than 4,500 visits by May 2025. Clinical services, including acupuncture, herbal medicine, and manual therapy, addressed symptoms such as neuropathy, nausea, and lymphedema, whilst rehabilitation sessions such as yoga and Qigong supported physical activity, sleep quality, and emotional wellbeing.
Future development plans include the establishment of a Precision Integrated TCM/WM Genomics Computing Center. The project will apply genomic analysis to support personalised treatment approaches that combine traditional Chinese medicine and Western medical practices within integrated care models.
